Best Time to Visit Cabarete: A Month-by-Month Guide

Cabarete is a year-round destination — but each month has its own character. Here's an honest breakdown of what to expect whenever you come.

Cabarete's greatest advantage over most Caribbean destinations is simple: there's no bad time to go. The temperature barely moves — air stays around 27–30°C year-round, water around 26–28°C. What does shift month to month is wind strength, rainfall, crowd levels, and the specific activities each season favours.

Below is an honest, month-by-month breakdown so you can match your trip to what matters most to you.

The Two Things That Drive Cabarete's Calendar

Trade winds. Cabarete sits in one of the world's most consistent wind corridors. The north coast trade winds blow from the northeast almost year-round — but their strength and consistency varies by season. Kitesurfers and windsurfers care deeply about this. Beach holidaymakers mostly enjoy it as a pleasant breeze that keeps the heat comfortable.

Rain. The Dominican Republic has two rainy seasons: a lighter one in May–June and a heavier one in September–November. Rain in Cabarete tends to come as short, intense showers rather than grey all-day drizzle — most days still see sunshine even in the rainy months. Hurricanes are a very low risk on the north coast specifically (the mountains to the south provide significant protection), but September–October is statistically the most active period.

Month by Month

January
🪁 Wind: Strong & consistent
Peak season. Perfect trade winds, dry sunny days, warm water. One of the best months for kitesurfing. Busiest and most energetic time in town. Book well ahead.
February
🪁 Wind: Strong & consistent
Arguably the finest month of the year. Dry, warm, reliable wind, and the town is humming. Whale watching in Samaná peaks in February. A genuinely special time to be here.
March
🪁 Wind: Strong, excellent
Still peak season. Wind holds strong, crowds are at their highest of the year. Last month for Samaná whale watching (Jan–Mar). Spring break energy in the second half.
April
💨 Wind: Very good, easing slightly
Excellent conditions, crowds begin to thin after spring break. Good value compared to Jan–Mar. Still firmly dry season. A sweet spot for those who want great conditions without peak crowds.
May
💨 Wind: Moderate, building
Shoulder season begins. First rains arrive but still mostly sunny. Crowds are low, prices drop. The town feels relaxed and local. A lovely time for those who don't need the full kite experience.
June
🪁 Wind: Building strongly
Summer wind season kicks off. June can surprise with very strong, consistent winds — some kitesurfers prefer summer to winter for the sheer power. Fewer crowds, competitive prices.
July
🪁 Wind: Strongest of the year
Peak summer wind season. Advanced kitesurfers love July for the raw power. European visitors arrive in numbers. Water is warm, evenings are long and social. Great value vs. peak season.
August
🪁 Wind: Strong, slightly variable
Still excellent wind, busiest summer month. Hot and humid. The town is lively with European summer visitors. Water sports are excellent. Hurricane season is technically active but risk on the north coast is low.
September
🌤 Wind: Light to moderate
Quietest month of the year. Fewer crowds, lowest prices, and the town is noticeably more local and relaxed. Wind is lighter — better for swimming and SUP than kiting. Some businesses reduce hours.
October
🌤 Wind: Building again
Still quiet but the wind starts returning. Rain showers can be more frequent but rarely last all day. Good value and the pre-season energy starts to build toward year's end.
November
💨 Wind: Good, improving
The transition month — wind picks up noticeably, crowds start returning. Excellent value with improving conditions. A hidden gem for those who time it right.
December
🪁 Wind: Strong, peak season begins
Peak season returns. Pre-Christmas is still manageable; from mid-December the town fills up. Wind is excellent, weather is perfect. Holiday atmosphere and a vibrant international crowd.

For Kitesurfers and Windsurfers

The best kite months are January through March (dry, consistent, classic trade winds) and June through August (stronger, more powerful summer winds). Both seasons produce world-class conditions — different character, same quality.

April and November–December are also very good and worth considering if you want good wind with fewer crowds.

For Beach Holidays and First-Time Visitors

Honestly, any month works well. The temperature barely moves. Even the "rainy" months typically see long stretches of sunshine between showers. If you want the full energy of the town, the classic Caribbean beach experience, and the best conditions for everything at once — December through April is the sweet spot. But don't rule out a quiet September or a sunny May if the pricing suits you better.

For Couples and Honeymooners

February is the answer. Perfect weather, whale watching day trip to Samaná, excellent wind, and the town at its most beautiful and vibrant. April and November are excellent runner-ups for those who prefer a quieter, more intimate experience. More on Cabarete for couples →
