The Dominican Republic is the most visited destination in the Caribbean — and there's a reason people keep coming back. But the DR is not a single experience. Punta Cana and Cabarete represent two completely different philosophies of what a Caribbean holiday can be. Getting clear on the difference before you book will save you from a vacation that doesn't quite fit.
This is an honest comparison. We're based in Cabarete, so we'll tell you when Punta Cana is the better choice.
The Short Answer
Punta Cana is for travellers who want a seamless, predictable, luxurious beach holiday with everything included. You pay upfront, you don't think about logistics, you relax by an infinity pool with a wristband that gets you unlimited cocktails.
Cabarete is for travellers who want an authentic Caribbean town, genuine water sports, local restaurants, a real community of expats and adventurers, and the flexibility to explore everything the north coast has to offer. You get more variety and more adventure for the same money — but you also make more decisions.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Category | Cabarete | Punta Cana |
|---|---|---|
| Vibe | Authentic beach town, international community, independent spirit | Resort zone, curated luxury, package holiday feel |
| Water sports | World-class kitesurfing, surfing, SUP, wing foiling, diving nearby | Hotel beach activities, calm Caribbean water, limited surf |
| Beaches | Kite Beach (windy, active), Cabarete Bay (lively), day trips to Playa Grande | Long palm-lined beaches, calm turquoise water, resort-front |
| Food | Wide variety — local Dominican spots, Italian, seafood shacks, beach bars | Mostly resort restaurants; good quality but limited outside resorts |
| Nightlife | Genuine, organic — beach bars, live music, bachata, mixed crowd | Resort entertainment — shows, themed nights, mostly contained |
| Accommodation | Condos, guesthouses, small hotels — far more variety for the money | Large all-inclusive resorts dominate; high-quality, high-price |
| Value | Excellent — you control spending, local prices are low | Upfront cost is high; once inside, everything is included |
| Getting around | Walkable town; day trips by taxi or rental car | Resort bubble; you need transfers for everything off-site |
| Local interaction | High — you're living in a real town | Low — most interaction is within the resort |
| Crowds | Busy in peak season but never overwhelming | Very busy; long lines for buffets and pools |
| Airport | Puerto Plata (POP) — 25 min away; smaller, easier | Punta Cana (PUJ) — major international hub, many more direct flights |
| Getting there from Canada | Direct flights from Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City via Air Transat, WestJet | Direct flights from most major Canadian cities, more frequency |
Who Should Choose Cabarete
Cabarete is the right choice if any of these describe you:
- You want to learn or practice kitesurfing, surfing, or other active water sports
- You want to actually experience Dominican culture — real restaurants, local markets, genuine interaction
- You're travelling with other active adults or couples who want adventure and variety
- You want a home base to explore the north coast — waterfalls, national parks, historic towns
- You want more space and value than a hotel room — a full condo with kitchen and balcony
- You prefer flexibility in how you spend your days rather than a structured resort schedule
- You're a digital nomad or remote worker who needs reliable WiFi and a comfortable workspace
Cabarete rewards curious, independent travellers. The more you explore, the more you get out of it.
Who Should Choose Punta Cana
Punta Cana is the right choice if:
- You want zero planning — check in and everything is handled
- You're travelling with young children who need a safe, contained, predictable environment
- You want to truly switch off — no decisions, no logistics, no thinking
- The beach itself is the main attraction and you don't need activities or exploration
- You're celebrating something (honeymoon, anniversary) in an ultra-luxurious resort setting
- You have limited time and want maximum beach relaxation with minimum friction
Punta Cana delivers exactly what it promises. It's a masterfully engineered beach holiday experience.
The Honest Take on Beaches
Punta Cana wins on beach aesthetics — the long, calm, palm-fringed stretches of Caribbean white sand are genuinely beautiful and the water is like a bathtub. Kite Beach in Cabarete is windier and more active, which is perfect for watersports but not ideal if your ideal beach day is lying still in calm water. If the beach itself is your primary goal, Punta Cana has the edge.
However, within 45 minutes of Cabarete you can reach Playa Grande — a stunning, uncrowded wild beach that rivals anything in Punta Cana. The difference is you have to seek it out rather than having it handed to you.
The Honest Take on Value
A week at a mid-range Punta Cana all-inclusive will cost a couple somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000 CAD all in. A week at RR210 in Cabarete — with a full kitchen so you're not eating out every meal, and a private pool — will cost considerably less, with money left over for day trips, restaurant meals, and kite lessons. The value equation strongly favours Cabarete unless you genuinely use and enjoy everything an all-inclusive provides.
The Bottom Line
Neither destination is better — they serve different needs. Punta Cana is one of the world's great resort destinations and it does what it does extremely well. But if you're the kind of traveller who reads articles like this one, researching your options and thinking about what kind of holiday you really want, there's a good chance Cabarete is your answer.
