Cabarete vs Punta Cana: Which is Right for You?

Two very different Dominican Republic experiences. Here's how to choose the right one for your trip.

The Dominican Republic is the most visited destination in the Caribbean — and there's a reason people keep coming back. But the DR is not a single experience. Punta Cana and Cabarete represent two completely different philosophies of what a Caribbean holiday can be. Getting clear on the difference before you book will save you from a vacation that doesn't quite fit.

This is an honest comparison. We're based in Cabarete, so we'll tell you when Punta Cana is the better choice.

The Short Answer

Punta Cana is for travellers who want a seamless, predictable, luxurious beach holiday with everything included. You pay upfront, you don't think about logistics, you relax by an infinity pool with a wristband that gets you unlimited cocktails.

Cabarete is for travellers who want an authentic Caribbean town, genuine water sports, local restaurants, a real community of expats and adventurers, and the flexibility to explore everything the north coast has to offer. You get more variety and more adventure for the same money — but you also make more decisions.

Who Should Choose Cabarete

Cabarete is the right choice if any of these describe you:

Best for: Active travellers, couples, small groups, adventure seekers, repeat DR visitors

Cabarete rewards curious, independent travellers. The more you explore, the more you get out of it.

Who Should Choose Punta Cana

Punta Cana is the right choice if:

Best for: Families with young kids, first-time DR visitors, honeymoons, pure relaxation seekers

Punta Cana delivers exactly what it promises. It's a masterfully engineered beach holiday experience.

The Honest Take on Beaches

Punta Cana wins on beach aesthetics — the long, calm, palm-fringed stretches of Caribbean white sand are genuinely beautiful and the water is like a bathtub. Kite Beach in Cabarete is windier and more active, which is perfect for watersports but not ideal if your ideal beach day is lying still in calm water. If the beach itself is your primary goal, Punta Cana has the edge.

However, within 45 minutes of Cabarete you can reach Playa Grande — a stunning, uncrowded wild beach that rivals anything in Punta Cana. The difference is you have to seek it out rather than having it handed to you.

The Honest Take on Value

A week at a mid-range Punta Cana all-inclusive will cost a couple somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000 CAD all in. A week at RR210 in Cabarete — with a full kitchen so you're not eating out every meal, and a private pool — will cost considerably less, with money left over for day trips, restaurant meals, and kite lessons. The value equation strongly favours Cabarete unless you genuinely use and enjoy everything an all-inclusive provides.

Insider move: Some travellers do both — a few days in Punta Cana to decompress, then a move to Cabarete for the adventure portion. The drive between the two is about 5–6 hours, but you can also fly Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata on small regional carriers.

The Bottom Line

Neither destination is better — they serve different needs. Punta Cana is one of the world's great resort destinations and it does what it does extremely well. But if you're the kind of traveller who reads articles like this one, researching your options and thinking about what kind of holiday you really want, there's a good chance Cabarete is your answer.
